What are Essential Oils?
Essential Oils are naturally occuring aromatic compounds that give a plant its distinctive aroma or scent. They also contain compounds that keep the plant healthy and protect it from diseases and insects. Essential Oils are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Besides being fragrant, essential oils can be used for many health benefits and contain anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory and immune boosting qualities. They are also effective for natural flea control remedies.
You may not realize that you are already using essential oils every day. Many soaps and lotions use essential oils for scents. Vicks vaporub uses eucalyptus oil and many toothpastes contain peppermint essential oils. We always recommend using natural essential oils versus synthetic for best and safest results.
Our doctors are trained in the safe use of essential oils for pets. It is a myth that essential oils are not safe for pets. When used the right way essential oils are very effective for various conditions and can replace or be used as an adjunct to traditional medications. Essential oils for pets should be diluted before use. Some essential oils such as oregano or even peppermint and eucalyptus are very effective, but may be too strong or even toxic when used in the wrong way. Some of these oils can even cause burns when used orally which may account for their bad rap when used for pets (especially cats which will lick essential oils that are applied topically undiluted – we don’t recommend doing this)
